A handscroll is viewed by unrolling it from right to left. Because the scenes appear a little at a time, the viewer can take in each detail slowly, one by one.
Drag the painting back and forth, and zoom in to look closely. Press the left arrow to meet its stories in the order the scroll unrolls.
Compare with the Song original How does this 1736 version differ from Zhang Zeduan’s 12th-century scroll? Composition, technique and story, side by side. This app displays the 1736 Qing Court version. Its layout was inspired by the Field Museum’s Qingming Scroll interactive. The painting in that interactive is a late Ming copy (late 16th or 17th century), which we initially mistook for Zhang Zeduan’s 12th-century Northern Song original when building this app.
